The concept of an “Organ Clock” in Chinese medicine is a useful tool in understanding why this occurs. In Chinese medicine, energy or chi, moves through the body’s meridians and organs in a 24-hour cycle. Every two hours the chi (or energy) is strongest within a particular organ and its functions within the body. So if you wake up at 3 AM, when liver energy peaks, you may be suffering from Liver Chi stagnation, which could be related to an unhealthy diet, excess alcohol consumption, unresolved anger, or high levels of stress. These chemicals can off-gas even when the mattress is ten years old and there’s no chemical smell! Beware of memory foam mattresses and toppers, too. Unless the memory foam mattress is manufactured with organic latex, it is made up of chemicals and man-made substances. For years, I slept on an organic cotton futon. These are great because they can be placed directly on the floor, a bed frame, or on top of another mattress – whatever works best for you.
