How We Find the Healthiest Restaurants for The Templeton List

Behind every great healthy restaurant recommendation is someone who did the homework.

Have you ever been traveling, hungry, and found yourself asking, “Where can I find a meal I can actually feel good about eating?”

Not another chain restaurant with a few “healthy options” tucked into the menu. A place that serves real food—organic ingredients whenever possible, grass-fed meats, wild-caught seafood, fresh vegetables, and meals prepared with care instead of convenience.

Finding restaurants like that isn’t always easy.

In fact, it takes far more than a quick internet search. Menus change. Ownership changes. Ingredients change. A restaurant committed to quality a few years ago may not be today.

That’s the challenge James Templeton faced after surviving Stage 4 melanoma more than 40 years ago. As he traveled extensively for business, he often found himself searching for restaurants that served the kind of wholesome food he believed supported good health. More often than not, those restaurants were difficult to find.

Rather than accept that reality, James decided to do something about it.

The Templeton List

James created The Templeton List—a totally FREE Healthy Restaurant Guide dedicated to helping people discover restaurants that value ingredient quality, healthier cooking methods, and greater transparency. Today, it has become one of the country’s most carefully researched resources for health-conscious diners.

Anejo Restaurant - Healthy restaurant on The Templeton ListHelping bring that vision to life is the “behind the scenes” researcher, Mark David. Since early 2019, Mark has devoted thousands of hours to researching, verifying, updating, and expanding The Templeton List.

From confirming ingredient sourcing and cooking oils to asking the detailed questions most diners never think to ask, Mark has helped make it easier for travelers and families to find restaurants where real food—not shortcuts—is still the priority.

The Seven Questions Behind Every Recommendation

Before a restaurant earns a place on The Templeton List, it must go through a detailed evaluation based on seven key criteria. Every restaurant is asked the same questions, and each answer contributes to its overall rating.

The Templeton List looks for restaurants that:

• Source ingredients locally whenever possible
• Use organic, pesticide- and chemical-free foods
• Cook with healthy, non-hydrogenated oils
• Serve and prepare food with filtered water
• Use real butter instead of margarine
• Avoid genetically modified (GMO) ingredients
• Prepare food without MSG

Restaurants that meet all seven criteria earn The Templeton List’s coveted 5-Star Rating, making it easy for travelers to identify establishments that share its commitment to healthier dining.

What Makes a Restaurant Stand Out?

After reviewing thousands of restaurants over the years, Mark has developed an eye for qualities many diners never notice. Fresh ingredients matter, of course, but so do transparency, sourcing practices, cooking methods, and owners who genuinely care about the food they serve.
While narrowing down his favorites wasn’t easy, these are a few that continue to stand out.

1. Pecan Craft Kitchen – Fruit Cove, Florida. Pecan sources from local farms whenever possible and serves elevated Southern-inspired cuisine featuring dishes like Kvarøy salmon, seasonal mushrooms, and other thoughtfully sourced ingredients from local farms. The staff’s willingness to accommodate guests whenever possible is another win.

2. Cielo Rojo – Takoma Park, Maryland. Known for its commitment to organic, locally sourced ingredients, the restaurant incorporates heirloom vegetables throughout its menu—even using heirloom corn in many of its dishes. Cielo Rojo has earned a place on The Templeton List through its unwavering commitment to quality, thoughtful sourcing, and a menu that showcases both creativity and craftsmanship.

3. Crafted — Downtown Yakima, Washington. Its menu changes with the seasons, reflecting what’s fresh and available from nearby farms. They openly identify the local farms that supply many of their ingredients. Owned by a husband-and-wife team, Crafted has earned numerous awards while staying true to its commitment to sourcing ingredients from within roughly a 100-mile radius. He recommends the picanha steak with charred beets and squash, a dish he describes as a food lover’s dream.

4. Tburg Main Street Market — Trumansburg, New York. Having gotten to know owner Lauren virtually, Mark can personally vouch for her unwavering commitment to quality. She is passionate about serving organic, top-tier ingredients and refuses to cut corners with margarine, industrial seed oils, or other highly processed ingredients. While Mark hasn’t had the chance to sample every dish, he’s consistently impressed by the creativity of the menus. The People’s Tacos are especially high on his must-try list, and he has little doubt the house-made kombucha lives up to the same high standards.

5. The Barn at Sovereignty Ranch — Bandera, Texas. Owned by Ryland and Mollie, this unique ranch reflects a deep commitment to regenerative agriculture, organic farming, and the principles of the Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) movement. Guests can enjoy meals prepared with farm-fresh ingredients—including organic pancakes, fresh fruit, grass-fed butter, pastured eggs, and tallow fries—many of them produced right on the property. Beyond the restaurant itself, Sovereignty Ranch offers a truly immersive experience, with a farm store, wellness consultations, educational events, and even a picturesque venue for weddings and special occasions.

6. 53 By the Sea — Honolulu, Hawaii. Set against a stunning waterfront backdrop, this fine-dining destination showcases the very best of island-inspired cuisine while emphasizing locally sourced, organic ingredients whenever possible. The menu is as impressive as the view, featuring exceptional seafood alongside wagyu beef, roasted duck breast, braised Big Island veal cheek, squid ink pasta, lamb manti, and Astrea caviar. It’s the kind of restaurant that demonstrates how thoughtfully sourced ingredients and world-class culinary talent can create an unforgettable dining experience.

What About Healthy Restaurant Chains?

While independently owned restaurants make up many of The Templeton List’s highest-rated discoveries, travelers will also find a number of regional and national chains that have earned recognition. One notable example is True Food Kitchen, co-founded by integrative medicine pioneer Dr. Andrew Weil. Built around an anti-inflammatory philosophy, the restaurant emphasizes thoughtfully sourced, seasonal ingredients and a menu designed to make healthy eating both approachable and flavorful.

Of course, it’s just one example. The Templeton List includes carefully evaluated chain restaurants alongside outstanding independent eateries, giving travelers healthier dining options whether they’re exploring a new city or simply stopping for a meal along the way.

More Than a Restaurant Guide

For Mark, helping to build The Templeton List has never been about finding trendy places to eat. It’s about carrying forward a mission that began with James Templeton’s determination to make healthy dining choices easier for everyone.

That means asking the questions many diners never think to ask. Where does the meat come from? Are the vegetables organic? Does the kitchen cook with industrial seed oils or healthier fats? Are ingredients sourced locally whenever possible? Is filtered water used in food preparation?

Those conversations—and countless hours of research—are what make The Templeton List’s Healthy Restaurant Guide unlike any other.

So the next time you’re traveling and wondering where to eat, remember that someone has already done the homework for you.
