Israeli scientists are researching the many ways that specific proteins found in the lung could be used to both detect and treat cancer. Professor Arie Admon of Technion-Israel Institute of Technology and Sheba Medical Center says: “This has the potential to activate the body’s own immune system against the tumor.”

His research found that specific peptides found in fluid from the lungs can “serve as a rich source of biomarkers for tumor diagnosis” and that these antigens could not only be used to stimulate the immune system so that it attacks the tumor, but could even be the basis of a “therapeutic vaccine” that has the potential to slow the growth of cancer.
