Research shows that women exposed to artificial light at night—whether from night shifts or even sleeping with lights on—face higher breast cancer rates. Intriguingly, blind women, who lack light perception, rarely develop the disease. Even breast cancer drugs like tamoxifen may be less effective when light disrupts natural melatonin production.
Recognizing this risk, the WHO, AMA, and NIH have classified electric light exposure as a potential carcinogen.
