It started as a backache that came and went and ended with a 13-hour surgery to remove his appendix, spleen, and a section of his colon. Only then was the rare form of appendiceal cancer identified. Appendiceal cancer, called pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP), usually starts in the appendix as a small growth and develops into a tumor.
